Ornithogalum How to plant, care for and grow Ornithogalum Family Asparagaceae Name derived from The Greek words ornis meaning bird and gala meaning milk. Common name Chincherinchee, witvioltjie Sun Exposure Full sun Flower Colours White or green/white Predators Thrips, mealybugs and aphids can spread viruses. Erwinia bacteria will cause a smelly black rot, this bacteria will affect the soil for four years – no susceptible genera will grow. Ornithogalum is a true bulb. There are about 120 species that originated in Africa, Europe and western Asia. 114 of the species are indigenous to South Africa and 38 occur in the Northern and Western Cape. At maturity, the plant will be 30 – 100cm tall. The plant is poisonous. Seasons and planting Jan Feb March April May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Available Plant NO Flowering NO Ornithogalum prefers sandy, well-draining soil and will grow in most garden soils. It should be planted at a depth of 2cm and the spaces between the bulbs should be 10cm, giving the plant enough space to grow. During its season, the soil must be kept moist through regular deep watering. This watering should be increased just before the plant begins to flower in order to ensure that the plant grows strong as the weather increases the temperature. The lowest temperature this plant can tolerate is 0°C. Once the bulbs are dormant, they will tolerate a small amount of water as long as the soil is well-draining, if the soil is not, they should be lifted during dormancy. Propagation Can be propagated by bulblets, bulbils or seeds – freshly sown when ripe. Can be multiplied by cutting off leaves.
