Anthony Ekerold

Anthony Ekerold's equestrian journey is a testament to unwavering commitment and perseverance. His story began in South Africa, where he ventured into junior riding with a mix of determination and modest success, occasionally seizing small victories.

However, the true turning point came after completing his schooling when he embarked on a transformative journey in Germany. Anthony honed his riding skills under the mentorship of Alois Pollman-Schweckhorst, a prominent figure in the German National Team. A year of dedicated training with Alois set the stage for what would become an extraordinary riding career.

The next leg of his journey led him to the hallowed grounds of Paul Schockemuhle's competition yard in Muhlen, another pivotal chapter in his equestrian adventure. Immersed in the world of high-level competition and training, Anthony continued to evolve as a rider, honing his skills to perfection.

Yet, life had more in store for him. Anthony's passion for law led him back to South Africa, where he undertook a significant 17-year hiatus from riding. During this period, he pursued academic excellence, achieving BCom, LLB, and LLM degrees, and established his own law firm. The equestrian arena temporarily took a back seat, but the fire within him never dimmed.

In 2023, he made a triumphant return to competitive riding, representing the Mark White Nissan Team Navara. Anthony now competes in the 1.40m class with his stallion, Optimus, showcasing a remarkable resurgence. This dynamic duo has their sights set on reaching new heights, with Optimus primed for his debut in the 1.50m category.

Alongside Optimus, two younger imports are on the rise in the 1.20m category, with aspirations to advance into open grades. Anthony's equestrian journey isn't limited to the ring; it extends to breeding as well, with the promise of future success as he prepares to introduce an unbacked filly into the competition circuit.

Anthony's dedication and hard work are underscored by a string of notable achievements. He and Optimus have secured numerous podium finishes, including a victory in the 1.35m Callaho-sponsored championship class at Maple Ridge WCQ.

This year, they've been a force to reckon with, consistently earning top positions and contributing to the 1.35m team's success as part of the Mark White Nissan Team Navara. Anthony's journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with passion and perseverance, one can triumph over any challenge.

Rooted in the Kwa Zulu-Natal midlands, Anthony's love for horses runs deep, instilled in him from a young age while growing up on a stud farm. With each stride, he embodies the spirit of dedication, and as his story unfolds, there's no doubt that Anthony Ekerold's equestrian journey is one of determination, triumph, and an enduring love for the sport.
